I use the lap top to do the things my PC is too old to do. XP is so old now that malware probably can't affect it because nobody would bother with it. I keep using it because it does what I want and I can do image backups to a separate hard drive I normally keep in the cupboard (viruses etc and windows corruption can't jump into a cupboard yet, but one day somebody will figure a way to do that I guess). When it does play up it is always the power supply. This pc is now 18 years old and will die one day. So to sum up: poping and smtping the telstra mail servers is finding the servers, but it is not getting as far as validating the username and password, the 800ccc0f error is occuring instantaneously before that. It made absolutely no difference (could still see the internet, log into web mail, etc, and the 800ccc0f error was still instantaneous). However, I have tried plugging my window PC directly into the telstra modem and shut down and restarted just in case there was some weird thing going on in the dlink router. The dlink router is simply because that was plugged into the optus modem until a week ago, so to save reconfiguring stuff I simply plugged it into the telstra modem. My home network set up is ethernet with my PC plugged into a dlink router which is plugged into the telstra modem which is plugged into the nbn hfc box. Using and make no difference (they are the same ip addresses as pop and smtp anyway).Ĭhanging them both to causes them to take quite a while to do anything and then they come back with a different error code.
The error with the correct port settings is not a time out problem, as, as I said, the errors come back in a fraction of a second, every time. Changing the smtp port to 587 instead of 465 simply times out after the 1 minute, which is what I probably would have expected. If I change the server names to and I get a different error saying the servers do not exist.
In any case, usually if the user name or password is the problem Outlook Express will prompt for them.
The 800ccc0f error occurs for both smtp and pop3 instantaneously so I'm not sure they are even getitng as far as account verification on the telstra servers! In fact it is not getting as far as validating the username as the error still occurs instantaneously when I change the username and I'm certain that user name with the same password will not exist. Using the account name without after it makes no difference (you can log into web mail with or without that appended) From what I have seen on the internet the problem occurs with all versions of outlook and windows, up to and including windows 10, and can occur on yahoo as well sometimes.
I can use these telstra account parameters on my android htc phone to send and receive the telstra mail OK so the problem is peculiar to telstra and windows.
While it may be a registry issue I do not intend to download some free registry fixer, but if it is indeed a registry issue then why would using gmail (with its server names and account, password etc) instead of telstra work, when it has exactly the same ports and settings (SSL etc)? Windows XP SP3 Firewall is off and I am not using a virus scanner I obviously do have an internet connection, or I could not use web mail! So I know they are correct in Outlook Express. Just to be absolutely sure I did not have a typing mistake in the Outlook Express account name and password I typed them into a text file then copied and pasted them to log into web mail and it worked, so I then copied and pasted them into the Outlook Express settings. Leave a copy of messages on server not ticked Any ideas anybody? It is weird that outlook express will work with a gmail account and not a telstra one! Have tried for both pop and smtp but that just takes forever to come up with a different error code. gmail uses exactly the same ports and settings (different account name of course) and it works fine on both sending and receiving, so the problem is with telstra combined with outlook express, as setting up pop and smtp for the telstra account with same settings on my android phone works (interestingly though I cannot log into telstra web mail using my phone - it hangs). User name tried with and without after it. Can log into web mail with same username and password and see mail there. When sending and receiving it instantaneously comes back with error 0x800CCC0F to both smtp and pop. Account pop and smtp are set up properly in outlook express on windows xp using and (same ip addresses as and ).
